Cooking at home is certainly more cost effective than eating out. But in order to cook on a budget, it doesnt mean that you have to buy cheaper food. Generally, cheaper food is less healthy for you, and everyday cooking should call for the most wholesome ingredients you can find.

If you have stress over cooking at home while still cooking on a budget, the first place to start is in the grocery store where your food bill originates. There are some simple ways that you can lower your grocery bill without having to buy inferior products and still make cooking at home nutritious and fun.

First, know your basic portions for the people for whom you cook. The following list gives you the averages for each type of food product that Im going to discuss today (per meal): Protein = 5 ounces raw protein Vegetable = 4 ounces raw vegetable Starch = 3 ounces raw starch

What this means is that if youre cooking for four people, 5 ounces of raw protein times 4 people is 20 total ounces. Thats less than a pound and a half total. Now, you have a quantifiable number to buy. Dont buy the three pound container of chicken breasts, youll over-cook, over-portion and waste food and money.

Be able to do some simple math while in the grocery store, because packages are down-sizing. Notice that many boxes of pasta are no longer a full pound. Many have been down-sized to 12 ounces, but the price not down-sized appropriately. You need to figure out the cost per ounce, or some common denominator so you can compare the products correctly.

However, you also have to keep this in mind when you are thinking about portion sizes. In my household, I prepare 5.3 ounces of dry pasta for two people. This gives me three meals out of a 1 pound box. However, if I can only buy a 12 ounce box, its easy to just make the whole box. Dont! The result will either be that you overeat or have to throw leftovers away. Be aware of the portions and save the uncooked leftovers in the box for another day. Your stomach and your pocket will thank you.

Cooking at home can save you more money than ever when you know your portions. Knowing your portions and paying attention to package sizes will make you able to purchase with your cooking in mind and not over-buy, pay the highest price per ounce, or throw the leftovers away. Your goal for cooking on a budget is to purchase only what youll cook, and cook only what you purchase. This is everyday cooking with your budget in mind.

Burn your recipes!” If youve been following me for any amount of time now, youve heard me utter that statement time and time again. Its not that Im entirely against using recipes for home cooking, its more because I see cooking meals as a personal art form or your kitchen culinary expression.

In fact, home cooking recipes are especially useful if youre looking for new ideas and flavor combinations. Recipes are useful for cooking meals if you want to try to duplicate something exactly.

Here are some of the things that recipes will tell you:

The ingredients to use
The correct weights and measures for the ingredients
The temperatures and degrees to use
How much time you should cook
What steps to take and when

But, you cant expect recipes to tell you everything that you need to know to make the meal come to life. I like to make analogies between cooking and music. Lets take sheet music for example. There are things that sheet music doesnt tell the piano player. There are variations in tone, pace, and interpretation. The musician has to bring the music to life through his or her own interpretation of the music that they are reading.

Here are some of the things that recipes dont tell you:

Variations in ingredients/substitutions
Variations in measurements/ mistakes in measuring
Variations in oven temps/stove temps
Variations in time
Why you are taking the steps you are taking

There are very few celebrity chefs that I enjoy. An exception is Alton Brown. I enjoy Alton Browns show because he also explains why hes taking the steps hes taking as well as how different ingredients, temperatures, etc. affect the food that you cook. One day when I was watching Alton, he was cooking a popover recipe that looked great. As I was watching, I thought that the amount of salt he used would make it too salty for me. But, when I tried to make the recipe, I used his exact measurements because, well, hes Alton Brown. Turns out the popovers were WAY too salty!

Next time, Ill take out some of my own recipe books I use for inspiration and point out some of the ways that I know the recipe book is broken. My goal is to help you to increase your kitchen culinary skills by using your home cooking recipes to cook meals that you can be proud of again and again.

A Cooking Network, what is it and why should you join one

Normally a network is a group, large or small, of people who come together to talk about a subject that is common among each other. In the case of a cooking network the common ground is cooking. If you do a search on the internet you will find there are a lot of cooking networks you could join. Some of the cooking networks are offline but you will find that the online cooking networks are bigger. This is of course because their are no travel limits when you are meeting each other through the internet.

How can you benefit from a cooking network

There are a lot of benefits you can get from being a member of a cooking network. Things like, cooking advice that members share amongst each other or the many new friends you are going to find. Friends who share your great passion for preparing food. Another thing you could do with a cooking network working on a new recipe or perfecting an existing one. Or just share your experiences with the other members getting tips on how to interpret a specific recipe is another benefit.

A lot depends on the organisers, in the case of an online cooking network most of the times this is the owner or moderator (they can be both). Other then the design of the website the moderator also will be the one who is responsible for the theme of the group, this can be very restrictive and depends on the interest the moderator/owner and the other founding members of the group. But nothing tells you can’t be a member of more then one cooking network. You can become a member of several groups all with their own interest.

Themes for a cooking network website can be very different. A network can be about cooking deserts or just about light cooking. A network can be about telling each other the latest and greatest in kitchen appliances.

Other networks close to cooking

When you think about it there are networks that are close to cooking. Network with members who specialise in food or special ingredients. Cooking networks should always keep in contact with these other networks because both could benefit from the contacts between these networks.

An owner or moderator of an online cooking network should always be working on keeping the network alive. This can be done by keeping the site up to date and to do continuous maintenance. Keep it attractive for visitors to keep coming back and for people to become a member of the cooking network. If a cooking network website is not of a specific theme the owner could think about organizing special theme weeks or longer periods. Looking at a specific cooking theme and getting others involved in writing articles about them.

In the end a cooking network is all about meeting other people who get the same joy from cooking as you do. If the network is an online one then be prepared to meet people who enjoy cooking from all over the world. Don’t be shy, that one special recipe could be waiting for you.

Too much food and less sports are the main causes of obesity in most industrialized countries. Another causes is the trend to sleep less and those who spend more hours awake more often also tend to open the refrigerator and snacking outside meals. Another causes is stress, another is
that many pollutants in the environment have the ability to alter the hormonal balance and therefore the metabolism of the human body.
On cold weather the body consumes energy to produce heat, but also it’s very hot in the summer you burn calories to activate the mechanisms that govern the physiological regulation of body temperature. Radiators and air conditioners urge us to stay home with the consequence of burning less calories and be tempted to go for drinks, juices, ice cream, etc..

No one says that the guilty is the pasta. Believe me.
